Many people describe a Reiki session as feeling incredibly relaxing and peaceful. While this is often attributed to the energy of the practice, there is a very real physiological shift happening within your body at the same time.
During a Reiki session, your nervous system undergoes a specific transition. It moves away from the Fight or Flight response (the sympathetic nervous system) and enters what is known as Rest and Digest mode (the parasympathetic nervous system).
When this physiological switch occurs, it signals your brain to release beneficial, feel-good hormones that support your well-being:
Endorphins: Often called the body’s natural pain relievers, these help to dull physical discomfort and create a sense of ease.
Serotonin: Known as the happiness hormone, serotonin helps to stabilise your mood, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of peace.
